Aylsham Rotary club donation
Aylsham Rotary club has raised an amazing £3000 to pay for Yohanna, a nurse at Hospice Ethiopia, to go to Hospice Africa Uganda in Kampala to study for her diploma in Palliative care.
Yohanna has said the following about this fantastic opportunity:
“My role as a palliative care nurse is to take greater responsibility for patient care and to become a specialist in areas such as pain management, symptom management and psychosocial support. In studying this diploma course in palliative care nursing, I hope that l will be able to make the most of these opportunities as my career develops. I anticipate that this diploma course in palliative care nursing will be the beginning of my lifelong career that will really make a difference in Hospice Ethiopia.”
Sue and Jamie attended a Rotary Club dinner in Aylsham at the Old Forge where Sue was able to update the members and guests about Hospice Ethiopia.

Tim’s sponsored swim
Last year, Tim Morgan raised nearly £3000 last year through a sponsored swim so we’re delighted that he is swimming again in aid of Hospice Ethiopia and this time in shark infested waters…(a lake in Suffolk)!

A car for Hospice Ethiopia
As many of you will be aware, last year the Diocese of Norwich’s Lent Appeal raised a staggering £40,000 to buy a car for Hospice Ethiopia. Due to various difficulties with importing the car, the purchase took longer than expected but it has finally arrived at Hospice Ethiopia in Addis Ababa!
The car will make a massive difference to the staff and patients of Hospice Ethiopia, allowing more people to receive vital palliative care in their own homes. The total amount the diocese raised was £44,724, so we have enough money for 4 years running costs too.
Thank you to everyone who donated so generously to the Lent Appeal.

Presentation at St Georges Church Hall, Dorchester
Sue and Jamie had an amazing turnout for their presentation last weekend in Dorchester, and raised £900 for Hospice Ethiopia.

January update

We’ve just had the quarterly report (for October-December 2017) from Hospice Ethiopia director, Ephrem. We were thrilled to read that following a visit to HE towards the end of last year, Ethiopiaid (based in Bath, UK) has given them £28,600! More about Ethiopiaid can be found on their website: http://ethiopiaid.org.uk/
Ephrem has been awarded a bursary and confirmed that he will come to the UK (visa permitting) for a leadership management course at the St Christopher’s Hospice from 15th-19th October. We are also hoping to arrange a clinical placement at Priscilla Bacon Lodge, Norwich for the week preceding the course Oct 6th-14th.
Sharing Experience of Global Palliative Care conference
Sue and Jamie attended a fascinating one day conference in Oxford on the 23rd September, organised by Palliative Care Works, another UK registered charity that HE UK works closely with. Two of the delegates who gave presentations had been taught by Sue and Jamie in Addis Ababa in March. Sister Emebet & Dr Aklilu have received bursaries from St Christopher’s hospice to attend their 5 day international palliative care course. Sister Emebet and Dr Aklilu gave a wonderful presentation about Ethiopia and their role in promoting palliative care in their country.
Lent Appeal 2017
The Diocese of Norwich’s Lent Appeal 2017 to raise funds for a new car for Hospice Ethiopia has raised over £40,000! This will pay for a new Toyota Rav 4 car and several years’ of running costs. This will allow for continued expansion of their community care programme, resulting in more people receiving vital palliative care in their own homes.
Many thanks to all those who donated so generously to the appeal.
