Fundraising has got off to a good start this year with several successful events in Aylsham and further afield. Steph & Wendy’s cake stall raised a magnificent £140.65 and Tim Morgan swam 5km (the third year running that he has swum in aid of Hospice Ethiopia UK) and raised an amazing £1,388. Sue & Jamie enjoyed a warm reception at Horncastle Lions and Rotary club dinner and following their presentation were delighted with over £1,100 being donated.

Successful fundraising in November & December 2018
We had a number of successful events to round off 2018; in particular the Big Give, which ran from 27th November to 4th December. We had hoped to raise £8,000 which meant we needed our donors to give £4,000 which would then be matched to raise £8,000. In fact, our donors gave £5,007 (£4,000 of which was doubled) and with Gift Aid the total raised was over £10,000. A fantastic result, which we could not have achieved without so many of our donors taking part.
Other events included Mary Lamb’s Open House event in December, which raised over £2,477, and the Bridge event at the Bishop’s Palace in Norwich, which raised over £1,450.

The Big Give is Live. Your donations matched for one week!
Many of you have generously made donations in the past that have helped provide care for many patients. We’re very excited to let you know that Hospice Ethiopia UK has been selected this year to participate in the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2018, the UK’s largest match funding campaign.
We will be raising money for our project, which is to pay for the nurses’ salaries at Hospice Ethiopia for six months. These nurses provide vital care and symptom control in people’s homes for those dying from cancer and other terminal illnesses. They are often their only point of contact, bringing relief to truly desperate people.
One donation, twice the impact!
Donations to this project will be matched for 7 days from 12pm on 27th November. So every pound you give during that period means two pounds for Hospice Ethiopia.
What happens during the Christmas Challenge?
Donations made to our project via theBigGive.org.uk will be doubled during the campaign. If you would like to support our work this year, we highly recommend doing so during the Christmas Challenge when your donation will make even more of a difference to Hospice Ethiopia.

650km Vietnam cycling trip
Paul Ayers & Olly Carter are cycling 650km from Hanoi (northern Vietnam) to Ho Chi Minh City (southern Vietnam) over 14 days (with 1 overnight train and a few coach transfers, to help cover the huge length of this country). This is all to raise much needed funds for Hospice Ethiopia.
This trip is self funded and they are being helped by “Intrepid Travel” who encourage sustainable tourism (meaning this trip benefits small Vietnamese enterprises along the route – rural food stops, local laundries, small home stays etc.)
Hospice Ethiopia is a charity close to Paul and Olly’s hearts. Nicola, Paul’s sister, is a palliative care advisor based in Ethiopia and works with their Ministry of Health on a voluntary basis. Her accommodation is paid for by a local church, so any donations go straight to those in need!
Please help them by donating what you can afford, large or small. It really will make a huge difference to those in serious need in the last stage of their lives.

The Aylsham Party
The Aylsham Party on Saturday 14th July was a great success, and overall we raised an amazing £1771. Many thanks to everyone who came – for many this won’t be the first time you’ve supported the hospice, so we are extremely grateful for your ongoing support.
As ever the Gentleman Gits played a fantastic set, which had people dancing until late. There were also many fabulous salads and cakes to choose from so no one went hungry.
Our thanks go to the many people who helped out at the event, from washing up in the kitchen, to baking cakes and manning the bar. We couldn’t do it without you all!
Particular thanks to the Gentleman Gits, Bretts who donated the fruit basket, and John Ennals from FC Gardiner for paying for the Public Liability insurance.

Certificate from Ethiopian government
Hospice Ethiopia UK has received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Ethiopian Ministry of Health for its work in “Supporting the planning and implementation of pain and palliative care services in Ethiopia”. This is a great step forward in the Ethiopian Government recognising the importance and relevance of palliative care.
