January update

cropped-he_header1.jpg

We’ve just had the quarterly report (for October-December 2017) from Hospice Ethiopia director, Ephrem.  We were thrilled to read that following a visit to HE towards the end of last year,  Ethiopiaid (based in Bath, UK) has given them £28,600! More about Ethiopiaid can be found on their website: http://ethiopiaid.org.uk/

Ephrem has been awarded a bursary and confirmed that he will come to the UK (visa permitting) for a leadership  management course at the St Christopher’s Hospice from 15th-19th October. We are also hoping to arrange a clinical placement at Priscilla Bacon Lodge, Norwich for the week preceding the course Oct 6th-14th.

Sue and Jamie attended a fascinating one day conference in Oxford on the 23rd September, organised by Palliative Care Works, another UK registered charity that HE UK works closely with. Two of the delegates who gave presentations had been taught by Sue and Jamie in Addis Ababa in March. Sister Emebet & Dr Aklilu have received bursaries from St Christopher’s hospice to attend their 5 day international palliative care course. Sister Emebet and Dr Aklilu gave a wonderful presentation about Ethiopia and their role in promoting palliative care in their country. bd848f98-38a6-4cd4-9677-fc38e1881715

Preparations Being Made for Hospice Ethiopia Visit in October 2017

In late October Sue and Jamie Mumford will be going back to Ethiopia along with UK volunteer Tim Morgan.  Sue and Jamie will be spending time teaching healthcare professionals from other NGOs about providing community palliative care, and further promote the work of Hospice Ethiopia. They will also meet with the HE director Ephrem and his accountant, to look through their accounts and see how money raised in the UK has been spent, as well as looking into future financial planning.

On Sunday November 26 at 3pm the three amigos will give a talk on the trip at Aylsham Catholic Church, White Hart Street, Aylsham. Do come along – the talk will cover the latest developments and there will be the usual superior offerings of tea, homemade cakes and the chance to buy interesting artefacts and Christmas cards.  For more information email info@hospiceethiopia.org.uk

Trump signs up for the Wolterton Extravagant

On September 16 2017 one of Norfolk’s great country houses, Wolterton Hall, will open its doors for the Wolterton Extravagant – a charity fundraiser in aid of Hospice Ethiopia.  Alongside a champagne reception, a three-course feast and lots of live entertainment, there’s the chance to win some exclusive prizes.  And Wolterton’s very own Trump is looking to bow-wow guests in a special prize draw.

TrumpPortrait

Trump is a rather beautiful pug.  He had a traumatic start to life but was rescued, as was his sister Coco, by the Hall’s new owners, Peter Sheppard and Keith Day.  Now, as befits the top dog at a magnificent country house, he lives a rather more urbane lifestyle, rubbing shoulders with the great and the good and not above taking a nap on an antique sofa, surrounded by portraits of the Walpoles, who built the Hall back in 18th century.

Fittingly, Trump cuts a magnificent figure.  Guests at the Extravagant will be invited to guess just how magnificent – with the chance to win an exclusive weekend break on the Wolterton Estate for whomever gets closest to his real weight.

The prize weekend promises to be special.  Peter and Keith are restoring the Hall and its grounds to their former glory.  As part of the project, they are converting a selection of the outlying buildings into luxury holiday cottages – the winners will be amongst the first to visit and will be able to enjoy the rambles through one of Humphrey Repton’s finest landscape designs.

“Trump is an absolute cutie, a real gentleman – certain other Trumps would be much more popular if they took their cue from him,” says Sue Mumford, chair of Hospice Ethiopia UK. “The Extravagant is going to be fabulous – it’s all about having fun while we raise funds for this truly amazing cause.   We’re hoping the ‘Guess the Trump’ game will tickle everyone’s funny bone – and encourage them to put their hand in their pocket, of course!”

The Wolterton Extravagant takes place on September 16 2017, 7.30pm till midnight, and tickets cost £50, which includes champagne and food.  There will also be a cash bar, dancing and an auction of promises including holidays, artwork and jewellery.  For more information and to buy tickets visit www.hospiceethiopia.org.uk or contact Clare Glenn, 01263 734853 or info@hospiceethiopia.org.uk

Lent Appeal 2017

The Diocese of Norwich’s Lent Appeal 2017 to raise funds for a new car for Hospice Ethiopia has raised over £40,000! This will pay for a new Toyota Rav 4 car and several years’ of running costs. This will allow for continued expansion of their community care programme, resulting in more people receiving vital palliative care in their own homes.

Many thanks to all those who donated so generously to the appeal.
